For a city of just 51,000 residents, Elkhart has an amazing number of cultural opportunities in the downtown area. From the historic Elco theatre to the beautiful RiverWalk, from the Midwest Museum of American Art to the New York Central Railroad Museum, you are sure to find a number of interesting things to do and see.
RiverWalk
Along the Elkhart River, Island Park
A paved pathway which connects seven parks in the downtown and features pedestrian-friendly walkways, plazas, terraces and footbridges traversing the river.
Midwest Museum of American Art

Founded in 1979, the museum has more than 2,500 works of 19th and 20th century works in the permanent collection. Works from George Luks, Robert Henri, Norman Rockwell, Grant Wood, Grandma Moses, and Thomas Sully are but a few of the noteworthy artists.
National New York Central Railroad Museum

A journey into the history of railroading with a focus on Elkhart's pivotal role. Hands-on exhibits, toy trains and full-size locomotives and rolling stock bring railroad history to life. Exhibits include three locomotives in the process of restoration, an extensive collection of memorabilia from New York Central stations and rail cars, and videos of trains in action.
Ruthmere Museum

Tour this historic 1908 Beaux Arts mansion, greenhouse and gardens. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The three-story brick and limestone home is accented with Italian marble, carved stone, and eclectic Prairie School elements.

Formally the Elco Theatre this ornate 1924 movie palace and theatre is undergoing renovations. REOPENING Q4 2010. Home of Premier Arts, the Elkhart Symphony, many concerts and private functions.
